Stairwell Lift for a Grocery Store in Chicago area (Elk Grove Village)
Custom stairwell lift to simplify work processes
Schaumburg Specialties was approached by a small community grocery store to design and provide a lift to raise and lower grocery products to and from a lower level storage area. The building purchased by the grocery store was repurposed to suit their needs to provide food staples to a small community.
The challenge encountered by the grocery was that incoming goods and bulk purchases needed to be lowered to the basement for storage or overflow capacity and then be raised or retrieved as shelf levels were in need of restocking. The only access to the basement or lower level was by a flight of stairs requiring the stocking team to carry heavy and make many trips between the two levels. What was desired was an elevator! However, an elevator was too costly for the store to justify.

Schaumburg Specialties designed a lift to raise and lower grocery products to and from a lower level storage area and incorporated torsion springs to assist or remove some of the weight of the door allowing it to be raised and lowered with less effort.
With the custom-designed lift, the process of product storing was significantly simplified.
Schaumburg Specialties was contacted to provide ideas for a suitable option. We collaborated with the grocery personnel as to what would be an acceptable lower-cost solution to an elevator.
One of the issues complicating or challenging the idea of a lift in the stairwell was that fire codes prohibited any type of stationary device that would restrict access or evacuation of the basement. As long as the apparatus or device was mobile that was deemed acceptable. So the proposal was to install a mobile straddle stacker, a type of miniature forklift with a 110-volt power source, and install a custom made cage or goods basket to safely and efficiently. The lift has a 2500 Lb. capacity and a 144" lift height. The cage or basket is permanently attached to the forks. The basket has a door/ramp that allows rolling carts to enter or exit easily.
One of the challenges encountered was that the door needed to be strong enough to support a heavy load but yet needed to be easily raised and locked into place without too much effort. Many of the personnel were women or older persons and the door needed to be easily lifted.
Schaumburg Specialties researched the concept of incorporating torsion springs to assist or remove some of the weight of the door allowing it to be raised and lowered with less effort.
Another feature Schaumburg Specialties was able to do was to apply a polyurea non-slip coating (like a spray-in pick-up truck bed liner) to the door/ramp and floor of the cage. The spring lift assist and coating finishing features are just two design examples of what Schaumburg Specialties is able to do when a custom project is required.
